The MIT swim test is an option for undergraduate students to complete the swim requirement (rather than taking a course).
The MIT boat test must be completed to participate in sailing, kayaking, or rowing.
The swim test consists of jumping into the pool feet first and swimming 100 yards continuously. To take the swim test, go to the Zesiger Center pool deck (don't forget your MIT ID card and towel). Upon arrival, notify the lifeguard you wish to take the test; they will alert the manager on duty. There is also the option to take a beginner swim course to fulfill the swim requirement. See the list of current quarter beginner swim class offerings.
The boat test is required by the sailing pavilion and boathouse to use sailboats or crew shells. It is also required for participation in the kayaking or sailing Physical Education and Wellness courses in Q1 and Q4. The boat test consists of jumping in the water, swimming 100 yards continuously immediately followed by treading water for 5 minutes.
Swim and Boat tests are offered at the Zesiger Sport and Fitness Center pool on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays at 8am throughout the Academic year. Drop in Swim and Boat tests are not available during Spring Break, Winter Break, Summer Break. You must arrive on time in order to be eligible to participate. When you arrive on deck, check in with the lifeguard who will alert the deck manager who will administer the test. Don’t forget your MIT ID and towel/goggles if needed.
