Students will learn the practical skills to be a safe open-water SCUBA diver. Class is split into two parts; the why and how of SCUBA diving which involves classroom and pool training, and open water swims. Upon completion of the course, eLearning and open water dives students will receive a SCUBA Diving International (SDI) certification. Course fee billed to student account includes instruction, eLearning materials, equipment for pool session (mask, fin, snorkel, air, wet suit). Voucher for open water and SDI certification available once all requirements are completed (including open water dive). Once forms are submitted through Docusign, the student’s account will be charged the full course fee. Refunds cannot be issued. This is an Extreme PE course. Offered Q1, IAP, Q3, Q4. Attendance is required on the first and last day!
Prerequisite: Q1 2024: Tue only: Sep. 17, 24, Oct. 1, 8, 22, 29, Nov. 5 (No classes 10/15) Thu only: Sep.19, 26, Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31. Both classes end in Q2. Class time: 6:45p-10p (meet at Alumni Wang pool/Classroom 66-154 after). Must complete PE&W Swim/Boat GIR by 9/4 to participate along with passing SCUBA pre-test on day 1, able to lift 40 lbs and in good health. Must complete all documentation forms from PE&W to confirm registration by 9/9. Attendance is required on the first and last day.
Equipment: Bathing suit or shorts and shirt. Equipment provided by United Divers for pool sessions. A mask, booties, fins and a snorkel must be purchased for open water dives.
Waivers Required: Documentation forms(ICE and Waivers) will be sent to registered students using their MIT email from the PE&W office once registration is closed. Forms must be completed by 9/9 to confirm your registration.United Divers SDI Medical waiver must be completed and sent to UD before day 1 of class. Waivers are located on the UD website.
